Fluctuation in diethylene glycol diethyl ether/water mixtures near the lower critical solution temperature studied by small- and wide-angle x-ray scattering and thermodynamic calculation

• Aqueous solution of diethylene glycol diethyl ether (DEGDEE) near lower critical temperature (LCST) was studied. Scattering data shows segregation DEGDEE and water in a nanometer length scale without short-range ordering. Fluctuation compared with thermodynamic calculation using the nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL) equation. Disadvantages NRTL model LCST can be attributed to its mean-field character. We studied local structure (DEGDEE)-water mixtures by means simultaneous small- wide-angle x-ray scattering measurement based on activity coefficient model. Long-wavelength limits factors S NN (0), CC NC which respectively represent mean square fluctuations particle number, concentration, their cross correlation, are determined from intensity extrapolated zero vector quantities according Bhatia Thornton formula.
